The process we use to create sustainable construction materials involves several steps that ensure our newly repurposed products are environmentally suitable and free of contamination.
The Construction and Demolition (C&D) sector makes up approximately 22% of the total mass landfilled at Class II and Class III landfills in Alberta. With a total generation rate of 677,395 tonnes per year, the amount of C&D waste disposed of in landfills is estimated to be 643,590 tonnes.
Our mission for the soil reuse facility is to educate everyone that soil can be treated and recycled the same way we think about recycling bottles and cans. The Soil Reuse Facility reduces greenhouse gases by reducing transportation to landfill and to virgin aggregate mining.
Currently, in Alberta, all contaminated and mixed debris soils are directed to the three classifications of landfills with no option for recycling or reuse. The Soil Reuse Facility at CAR will provide a 90% reduction in soil disposal volumes in area landfills.
Using 90 – 95% facility recycled water and provide a responsible alternative to carbon-intensive virgin aggregate mining.
The CAR facility will have the capacity to process 3,000-tonnes of material daily, resulting in 2,700-tonne of waste diverted from landfill and reclaimed as several specifications of clean, sand, and aggregate materials for reuse.
In the last 3 years, CAR has diverted over 750,000 tonnes of clean soil material, concrete, and asphalt rubble from landfill, recycling them for reuse.
Annually, CAR could channel more than 1.25 million tonnes of material from Calgary and area landfills, simultaneously restoring land for future use and driving down CO2 emissions.
